Ruth Patterson

Ruth Patterson, 100 years old, of Portland, New York, passed away on Monday afternoon, September 25, 2017 at the Chautauqua Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Dunkirk, coming there from previously residing for several years at the WCA Home in Fredonia, New York.

Ruth was born August 5, 1917 to Clarence and Nell Burhans Henris and lived in this area her entire life. She was a graduate of Westfield Central School and was a Toll Collector for the New York State Thruway System. Ruth was also the Assistant Postmaster for the Portland Post Office. She was Chairman of the Republican Committee, and belonged to the Brocton Portland Senior Citizens. Ruth was a member of the Portland Congregational Church of Portland New York for 86 years, joining in 1929. She also belonged to the Wymadosis, the Fredonia Garden Club and the Brocton Portland Bridge Club. Ruth was also a member of the Eastern Star of Sherman, New York.

Ruth is survived by her three sons, Robert (Roberta) Patterson, Douglas (JoAnn) Patterson and Richard (Lynda) Patterson, all of Portland, New York; seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, Ruth was predeceased by her husband, Vivian (Vee) Patterson, whom she married June 28, 1940 and who passed away February 26, 2000 after 59 years of marriage. She was also predeceased by two brothers, Charles and Fred.

Funeral Services will be held on Saturday morning, September 30, 2017 at noon at the Portland Congregational Church, Portland, New York. The Rev. Gordon Spiller will officiate. The family will welcome family and friends at the church from 11 a.m. to noon, one hour prior to the start of the Funeral Service. Interment will follow at the Portland Evergreen Cemetery.
