Esther M. Smith, 90, of Dunkirk died CHRISTMAS DAY (Dec. 25, 2017) at the Chautauqua Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Dunkirk.

She was born April 19, 1927 in Dunkirk, the daughter of the late Felix and Monica (Luczkowiak) Czekanski.

A lifelong Dunkirk resident, Mrs. Smith was a parishioner of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church. She had been employed as a computer operator at the State University of New York at Fredonia.

After taking an early retirement, Esther enjoyed spending time with family. She enjoyed going on vacations to Cedar Point, Waldameer and Kennywood.

Esther also enjoyed doing her daily crossword puzzles and word-searches. She loved the Christmas season and spending quality time with family. A selfless and caring woman, she always put others before herself.

Survivors include two daughters, Barbara M. Smith of Dunkirk and Susan (Gary) Julius of Lakeland, Fla.; one brother, David (Ann) Czekanski of Rochester; five grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her twin sister, Isabel Roesler.

Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at 2 o’clock in St. Mary’s Cemetery Chapel. The Rev. Dennis G. Riter officiated. Entombment was in the Resurrection Mausoleum. Memorials may be made to St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church or Chautauqua Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Arrangements were by the McGraw-Kowal Funeral Home.
