Charlotte Ann (Sheffield) Hamada 1942 - 2018

Charlotte was born in Dunkirk, NY (Brooks Memorial Hospital) and raised in Fredonia, New York, an only child of Charles W. Sheffield and Carrie M. Sheffield and concluded her life January 28, within the year of her 50th wedding anniversary being married to Kiyoshi Hamada, after a month and half of illness at Morristown Memorial Hospital, NJ.

Survivors include Charlotte’s husband Kiyoshi Hamada and Charlotte’s mother Carrie M. Sheffield, along with her cousins.

An increasing desire to pursue her life, led her to New York City after graduation from Fredonia High School (FHS Class of 1960). She worked in various organizations, including hospital administration, medical doctor’s private offices, and was associated with church in her Christian faith.

She also furthered her education, attending the New School, New York University and Columbia University in Manhattan, New York City, studying sociology, psychology, the legal secretary program and Old English.

In addition to furthering her education, she studied the Holy Bible daily and read the encyclopedia, cover to cover, to fulfill her knowledge for better communication and writing skill.

She began writing poems while in High School, observing neighbors to start, and later New York City life, exotic people and environment during traveling overseas, and rural life in Northern New Jersey.

Charlotte married Kiyoshi Hamada, born in Tokyo, Japan and a naturalized U.S. citizen, May 27, 1967 in Brooklyn Heights, New York. After living in New York City (eight years in Brooklyn Heights and 11 years in Eastside uptown Manhattan), Mr. and Mrs. Kiyoshi Hamada moved to Sussex County, New Jersey and lived over 30 years at their current location.

She supported her husband’s career and his post retirement by taking care of the household.

She cared for relatives and her friends/ acquaintances so much that most of her own time was spent in communicating/ writing to them.

Charlotte is the founder of North Church Society, and member of Sussex County Historical Society, Princeton University Art Museum and Montclair Art Museum.

Graveside Service will be on May 5, 2018 (Saturday) 2 p.m. at Willowbrook Park Cemetery in Dunkirk. The Memorial Service – delivery of eulogy by Judge David Prince – will follow at the nearby location.
