Fredrick J. Woods of Arkwright, a decorated Army veteran of World War II and longtime active member of Fredonia Presbyterian Church, died peacefully Tuesday at his daughter’s home in Buffalo. He was 93. Mr. Woods, the youngest of eight children of the combined families of Harry D. and Sarah “Sadie” Miller Meger Woods, went to school in a one-room schoolhouse in Shumla before he was inducted into the service in February 1943. In June 1944, he was among the soldiers who landed on Utah Beach two days after D-Day. A private first class, Mr. Woods was awarded a Purple Heart along with his service medals after an explosion sent shrapnel through his left leg. Mr. Woods married the former Jane Melissa Reid in 1946 and the couple settled in Hamburg. He spent his career working for local dairies, and was a regional sales manager for Upstate Milk Cooperative in Jamestown when he retired in 1986. He is survived by his son, Fredrick R. Woods (Donna Vanburen), his daughters, Melissa J.Woods (William LePard) Melinda Miller (Michael); eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Fredonia Presbyterian Church, 219 Central Ave., Fredonia, with visitation Friday evening from 5 to 7 p.m. at the church.Flowers are gratefully declined.
