LeVern Henry “Gibby or Gib” Gibson

LeVern Henry “Gibby or Gib” Gibson, of Ripley, NY passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 23, 2018 at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Erie, PA with his loving family by his side. He was born in Westfield, NY on April 11, 1944 to the late Henry and Della (Stowell) Gibson.

A Ripley resident most of his life, he married Verne Boyd on December 29, 1965, in East McKeesport, PA. He worked 32 years for the former Chautauqua & Erie Telephone Company in Westfield, NY in various capacities over the years, from outside repair to cellular, finally retiring from system sales. He served the Town of Ripley as Town Justice twice, first from 1975-1982, and then again since 2011 until his passing. He always had the right words and a calming demeanor, which suited him well for such a role.

He was well known for his athletic prowess and competitive spirit in almost every sport he ever tried, football and baseball when he was younger, then softball and golf. He was a great coach and mentor to all of his teammates, but, most especially to his daughters and grandchildren. He never missed a game or meet, and was always encouraging and continually teaching.

He is survived by his wife, Verne, and his daughters, Christine (Dallas) Adams of Portland, NY and Candice Steger of Ripley, NY. He is further survived by his grandchildren, Emilee Steger, Branan Henry Britt and Catherine “Catie” Britt, and his niece, Joanne Barnhart. The family wishes to especially thank Mr David O’Brien for his wonderful friendship over the years and always being here whenever Gibby needed a ride to an appointment when he wasn’t feeling well enough to drive himself.

He was preceded in death by his parents and half brother, Earl Barnhart.

While our hearts are broken, we are filled with he memories of all he taught us and of all those who shared their wonderful memories of him with us. We will continue to pass on his knowledge to our loved ones.

Relatives and friends may call at the Mathews Funeral Home, 104 West Main Street in Ripley, NY on June 29, 2018, from 5:00-7:00PM with LeVern’s Funeral Service, conducted by Pastor Mark Shettler of the Immanuel United Methodist Church of North East, PA, immediately following the calling hours.
