Margaret Mead

Margaret Mead

Margaret Mead, formerly of Dunkirk, lost her battle with ALS after a long and valiant fight on October 7, 2018. Prior to her illness, Margaret was very active. She enjoyed running, hiking, kayaking, cross country skiing, snow shoeing and traveling.

Throughout her life, Margaret had been involved in many organizations including Shorewood Junior Golf, Hammerhead Swim Club, Brooks Hospital Auxiliary, various Fredonia Central School activities and the Tahoe Rim Trail Association. She was an

avid reader and very much enjoyed the time she spent in book clubs with her friends in Fredonia and in Truckee, CA.

She was no stranger to the illness as it took her brother, Billy Mead’s life in 2002. Margaret was a strong believer in ALS research and when Billy became stricken with the disease, they started the billy mead run for research 5K in Dunkirk, NY. The race was run for seven years and raised an excess of $500,000 for Project ALS, a non-profit that funds numerous ALS research studies. Throughout Margaret’s illness, she participated in many trials and studies in hopes of helping to find the cure. While living in the Dunkirk/Fredonia area, Margaret and her husband Tom

Reed hosted many foster children in their home. She took great pride in making a nice, safe home for them. Margaret is survived by her husband, Tom Reed, her children, Maggie Reed (JoeFanelli), Beth Perry (Jason Perry) and Annie Reed (David Jensen). Also five grandchildren – Kaya and Margaret Lutz and Reed, Dillon and Quinn Perry and her siblings, Jim Mead (Sandi), Tom Mead (Elaine), Kate Mead, Kelly Mead, Joan Mead Miller (Bob) and Pat Mead (Deb) and several nieces and nephews along with great nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents, James Mead and Margaret Koch Mead and her brother Billy Mead and sister, Ann Mead Milligan. A celebration of her life will be held on November 12 at 11 a.m. at the University of Buffalo Newman Center. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Project ALS, 801 Riverside Drive, Suite 6G, New York, NY 10032 (www.projectals.org).
