Donald N. Lazar, age 85 formerly of Gowanda, passed away Thursday evening Jan. 7, 2019 in Orchard Park surrounded by his wife and 3 sons.Don was born in North Caldwell, NJ on April 9, 1933 the son of John and Emma ( Nick) Lazar .Donald graduated from Passaic Valley High, Class of ’51, and Bachelors and Masters degree in Education from Buffalo State. Don honorably served his country with the United States Army and was a member of St. Joseph’s RC Church, Gowanda . Don’s career in education spanned over 30 years;at the time of his retirement in 1988 he was the Elementary Principal for Forestville Central School, prior he was an Elementary School Principal for both Gowanda and Randolph School Districts. Other education employment includes the Autistic Services of Buffalo, The Collins Correctional Facility, where he taught
general studies and developed the education program for the facility. Don was Mayor of Gowanda, NY for 18 years;he also served on the Village Board for 2 terms.Survivors include his
wife of nearly 62 years the former Carol J. Battaglia whom he married June 15, 1957 in St. Aloysius RC Church In Cheektowaga, 3 sons; Michael J. Lazar, Richard T. Lazar (both of Kansas City , Mo.) and David N. (Alison Markel) Lazar of Hamburg , grandchildren Jamie Hester, Crystal Renee Rodriguez and Jacob Lazar, great grandchildren Rico Rodriguez, Kenley Hester and Penelope Rodriguez . Don is also survived by his brother John (Sandy) Lazar of Clearwater, Fla. Along with several nieces and nephews.Friends may call Monday Jan.21 from 4:00-7:00pm at
the SCHINDLER FUNERAL HOME 44 Center St Gowanda. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated Tuesday January 22, 2029 @ 11:00 am from St. Joseph’s RC Church East Main St. Gowanda (please
assemble at church) . Interment to follow with full Military Honors at the Holy Cross Cemetery Gowanda.If desired, memorials may be made to a local charity of ones choice.
