MAYVILLE — Janet E. Anderson Meissner, 68, of Mayville, died Friday, June 7, 2019 at her home with her children at her side.
She was born September 8, 1950 in Jamestown, NY, the daughter of the late C. Arthur (Art) and Alfreda O. Nelson Anderson.
Janet had worked as a math instructor for 33 years at the State University of New York at Fredonia. In earlier years she had worked for Taylor Jamestown Furniture, Klings in
Mayville, and as a teacher at Fredonia High School.
She was a graduate of Southwestern Central School, class of 1968, where she was the salutatorian. She earned her Master’s Degree in Education from the State University of
New York at Fredonia, graduating magna cum laude.
Janet was a member of the Mozart’s Club, and the Mayville United Methodist Church where she served as treasurer for many years. She was also a part of the church choir, the bell choir, the Camp Scholarship Fund and dinners, and took care of communion. After her retirement from SUNY Fredonia, the Professor Janet Meissner (NCTM) Scholarship Award was created in her honor for the top math student.
She enjoyed church activities, math, music, picnics, walks, flower gardening, home improvement projects, decorating and time with her family.
Janet is survived by her husband Leonard R. Meissner, whom she married June 3, 1972 in the Old First Baptist Church of Jamestown; her two children Jill (John Jr.) Szumigala of Mayville and Andrew Meissner of Buffalo; four grandchildren, Joseph and Kendra Keyser, and John III and Alexis “Lexi” Szumigala; one sister, Linda (Dan) Fellows of Greenhurst; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents C. Arthur (Art) and Alfreda O. Nelson Anderson.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, June 13, 2019 at the Mayville United Methodist Church (81 S. Erie St). The Rev. Mark Parsons will officiate. Burial will be in the Mayville Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday, June 12th at the Freay Funeral Home in Mayville (139 S. Erie St).
