C. Frederick Kurtz M. D.
Doctor Charles F. (Fred) Kurtz age 83, a long time Medical Doctor in Gowanda passed away at home Sunday morning December 8, 2019.
He was born February 11, 1936 in Ft. Wayne Indiana to Gaylord and Lena (Brown) Kurtz.
Dr. Kurtz graduated from Franklin College in 1957, received his Doctor of Medicine from Case Western University in Cleveland in 1961. His internship was done at the Lankenau Hospital in Philadelphia, Pa. and his residency was done at the Hunterdon Medical Center in Flemington, N. J. Fred was drafted into the United States Army as a Medical Doctor during the Vietnam War, and was a physician for our troops at the Tan Son Nhut Air Base in Saigon.
Dr. Kurtz’s medical career spanned nearly 50 years, he served as a family physician in North Collins before opening his practice at 62 West Main St. in Gowanda. He was a member of the Tri-County hospital staff, a board member of the Blue Shield of WNY, and retired as the lead staff physician at the Collins and Gowanda Correctional facilities.
An avid reader, Fred also enjoyed gardening and using his dry wit to make puns. He was a member of the Trinity United Church in Gowanda where he also participated with the church choir. Dr. Kurtz was the past President of the Gowanda Central School Board, The Gowanda Free Library and the Kiwanis Club.
Fred married Annelore F. “Snooky” (Lahvis) at the Lahvis home in the Town of Perrysburg on June 18th, 1961. Fred and Snooky enjoyed traveling and especially remember their trips to Africa and China.
Family members include his wife Snooky, son Andrew F. (Wendy) Kurtz of Macedon, NY, daughter Kathryn A. Kurtz of Orchard Park, grandsons Aaron M. & Tristan J. Kurtz, along with a brother Gaylord (Sue) Kurtz of Lake Wales, FL and several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Dr. Kurtz was preceded in death by a daughter Gayle Kurtz and a sister Phyllis Wolohon.
There will be no prior visitation and a service will be held at a future date. If desired, memorials may be made to the Trinity United Church of Christ (30 Erie Avenue), The Gowanda Ambulance (PO Box 143) or to the Gowanda Free Library (56 West Main St.) all of Gowanda , NY 14070.
