Barbara Bernstein

After a valiant struggle with health issues, Barbara A. (nee Bialaszewski) Bernstein, 84, was called away Tuesday (Feb. 4, 2020) to join her husband of 59 years, Harry.

Barbara was born and raised in Dunkirk and graduated from Dunkirk Senior High School. She married her one true love, Harry Bernstein, on August 15, 1953. She was a devoted wife and loving mother to their nine children; raising the first alone while Harry served two years in the military.

In addition to caring for her family, Barbara was an integral part of the family business, Harry’s Moving & Storage. She is probably best known for her time at The Bomber House in downtown Fredonia, where she worked for 32 years, putting smiley faces on the sandwich wrappers on her customers.

Barbara was an expert crocheter and made afghans for patients at the dialysis ward at Brooks Memorial Hospital while Harry was a patient there. A life-long parishioner of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish, she also enjoyed putting together jigsaw puzzles with her grandson, Haiden.

Mrs. Bernstein is survived by her nine children, Ann Kourelis, Kathy Gugino, Pamela (Jeffrey) Cranston, Leslie (the late Steven) Listisen, Cheri Grant, Robin (Randy) Charles, Scott (Dea Richards) Bernstein, Harry “Ted” Bernstein and Kyle (Dale Hazelton) Bernstein. She is also remembered by her 19 grandchildren: Erin Kourelis, Alexander (Marta) Kourelis and Adam (Liz Crespo) Kourelis; Michael Gugino; Jodi (Zach) Ogren, Carly Kulig and Joseph Kulig; Justin (Jessica Franklin) Kern, Barbie (Jeff Gee) Kern and Allie (Sean) Hoffman; Jessica (Dan) Proctor, Megan (Chris) Inch, Timothy (Nicole) Charles and Zach (Sara) Charles; Ella (Will) Griffie and Erik Bernstein; and Casey White, Tea White and Harry Bernstein III.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her parents; Stephen and Anna (nee Mizwa) Bialaszewski, and her brother Ronald Bialaszewski.

Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours. Arrangements are by the McGraw-Kowal Funeral Home.
