John Hervie Childs

John was born May 1, 1951, in Buffalo, N.Y., a son of the late Hervie and Ruth (Young) Childs.

He was a life-long resident of Portland where he loved working his land with his beloved antique tractor “Ollie” but most of all he enjoyed having family and friends gather and spend time together.

John retired after many years of employment at Dunkirk Radiator as an assembler. In his younger days, he was a volunteer fire fighter and earned the nick name “Big Bad John”.

He is survived by his loving wife, Patricia (Nosal); son, Stanley (Catherine) Childs; his daughter, Susan Childs; grandchildren: Amber, Amanda, Matthew, and Maria; step-grandchildren: Jonathan, Shanon, Timmy and Crystal; one great-grandson, Robert Huck Johnston. Further survived by his brother, Dale Childs; and his sister, Sharon Childs; also, sister-in-law, Laurie (William) Petsch; nephews: Michael and Billy Petsch; niece, Stephanie (Dennis) Mink; great-niece, Haleigh and great-nephew, Christopher Furman; and cousins: Tom and Richard Winters.

The family would like to express their gratitude to Stephanie and Dennis for their amazing and loving commitment in caring for John during his illness.

A private celebration of life is being planned by the family.

Memorials in John’s behalf may be made to the Portland or Brocton Rescue Squads.
