Joseph L. Greco

Joseph L. Greco Jr., 87, of Fredonia, N.Y., passed away peacefully at his home Sunday, May 31, 2020, with his loving family by his side. He was born March 26, 1933 the son of the late Joseph and Mary (Zoda) Greco.

Joe married his high school sweetheart, Sylvia Ubaney, July 16, 1954. They celebrated 62 years of marriage before her passing in 2017.

A longtime Fredonia resident, Joe graduated from Fredonia High School in the class of 1951. He then entered the U.S. Army serving during the Korean War. He was employed for 38 years at Great Lakes Color Printing in Dunkirk until the plant was closed.

Joe was a caring and charitable person, always willing to help others. He and his wife will be remembered by many for delivering Meals on Wheels. He also visited area hospitals and homes visiting the sick and the elderly.

His family was the focus of his life, he enjoyed family gatherings with his children, grandchildren and extended family members. Joe also enjoyed playing golf and was extremely proud of his “hole in one.” He also looked forward to playing cards with family and friends.

He was a member of St. Anthony’s Church in Fredonia, where he attended daily Mass. His other memberships include St. Vincent De Paul Society and Dunkirk Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1017. Joe also held life memberships in the Knights of Columbus 4th Degree Council 727, Knights of Columbus Council 7921, Fredonia American Legion Post 59 and the Fredonia Beaver Club.

He is survived by his children: Gail (Art) Phillips of Marysville, Pa., Robert (Susan) Greco of Hendersonville, N.C., and Diane (Michael) Mahoney of Dunkirk, N.Y.; his youngest sister, Lucy (Lewis) Moore, brother-in-law, Stephen (Dawn) Ubaney; grandchildren: Nicholas (Chanda) Greco, Brian (Amanda) Phillips, Robyn (Brion) Dixon, Jennifer (Roland) Ritter and Rebecca Mahoney. He is also survived by seven great- grandchildren; and his nieces and nephews.

Besides being predeceased by his parents and wife, he was also predeceased by his two brothers: Frank and Santo Greco; and his sister, Theresa Gervasi.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in Joe’s memory may be made to St. Anthony’s Church or St. Vincent De Paul Society, 66 Cushing St. Fredonia, NY 14063. A celebration of life will be announced and held at a later date.
