Dr. Donald G. Corter, 79, a native and lifelong resident of Fredonia, N.Y., died Tuesday morning (June 23, 2020) at Brooks Memorial Hospital in Dunkirk.

He was born Dec. 12, 1940, in Dunkirk, N.Y., the son of the late S. Gordon and T. Ruth (Maines) Corter of Fredonia.

Dr. Corter graduated from Fredonia High School, class of 1958. During his junior and senior year, he was awarded the National Science Foundation student membership card.

He qualified for appointment to U.S. Military Academies and in 1958 was appointed to the U.S. Air Force Academy by Congressman Daniel Reed.

A 1962 alumnus of Michigan State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in biological science, Dr. Corter graduated in 1967 from SUNY at Buffalo with a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree.

In his junior year at SUNY Buffalo, he volunteered for military service. On active duty from 1967- 1969 as a captain in the U.S. Army Dental Corps, he returned to Fredonia in 1969 and took over the practice of Dr. Donald G. Seydel. At the time of his retirement, Dr. Corter had practiced dentistry in Fredonia for 50 years.

His numerous memberships include lifetime member of the Michigan State University Alumni Association, life member of the American Dental Association and the New York State Dental Association, 24-year member of Fredonia American Legion Post 59, SUNY at Buffalo Dental Alumni Association and life member of Eighth District Dental Society;

Dr. Corter was an avid Buffalo Bills and Michigan State Spartans fan. He belonged to Dunkirk Moose Lodge 89 and the Lakewood Rod & Gun Club. A pyrotechnics enthusiast and 20-year member of the Pyrotechnic Guild International, Dr. Corter always looked forward to the Fourth of July, his favorite holiday.

Survivors include his loving companion, Nancy J. Castiglia; and two sons: Todd G. Corter and Mark L. Corter, both of Florida.

Besides his father, S. Gordon Corter of Mill Hall, Pa., and his mother, T. Ruth Corter of Barnesboro, Pa., he was preceded in death by a brother, David G. Corter of Fredonia.

Following the guidelines and protocols administered by the Governor of New York, family and friends may call at the McGraw-Kowal Funeral Home on Friday, July 10, 2020, from 4-7 p.m. Graveside services will be held Saturday morning, July 11, at 11 a.m., in Forest Hill Cemetery. The Rev. Molly T. Golando will officiate. Full military honors will be accorded by the Dunkirk Joint Veterans Council Honor Guard.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
