Everett J. Phillips Jr.

Everett J. Phillips Jr. of Dunkirk, N.Y., passed at age 90 on September 18, 2020.

He was born April 19, 1930, in Englewood, N. J. He was the son of Everett and May (Keyes) Phillips.

Everett graduated from Dwight Morrow High School and went on to graduate from Springfield College in 1953, with a bachelor’s degree in physical education. Everett then served in the U.S. Navy between 1953-56 in Izmir, Turkey. He then worked at Mount Hermon Prep School between 1956-59 and the University of Rochester between 1959-70. While working at the University of Rochester, Everett earned his master’s degree in 1964 from Springfield College. Everett then obtained his doctoral degree in physical education administration from the University of Oregon 1971. Dr. Phillips was then hired by SUNY Fredonia in 1970 as the chairman of the Heath, Physical Education, Athletics and Dance Department. While at SUNY Fredonia, Dr. Philips held the position of men’s cross country coach until his retirement from SUNY Fredonia on Dec. 31, 1994. He also coached women’s cross country from 1992-94 and returned as interim coach for one season in 2003. During his tenure at Fredonia, athletes coached by Dr. Philips achieved NCAA Division III All American status 18 times, with one crowned national champion.

Dr. Philips was inducted into the SUNY Fredonia Athletic Hall of Fame in 2000, The Niagara Track and Field Hall of Fame in 2014, and the University of Rochester Athletic Hall of Fame in 2016.

Dr. Philips was a member of the Dunkirk Yacht Club for 47 years, where he served as commodore in 1975 and 1976. He also served as Cypress Landing Yacht Clubs first commodore in 1996.

Dr. Phillips is survived by his wife, Shirley and four children: Everett Phillips III, Karen Phillips, Brett (Jen) Christy and Brian (Diana) Christy; and daughter-in-law, Christine Phillips. He is also survived by three grandchildren: Tristan Phillips, Hannah and Alex Christy.

Dr. Philips was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary; and his son, Mark.

Family and friends may call on Friday, Oct. 2, from 3:30-6:30 p.m., at LARSON-TIMKO Funeral Home, 20 Central Ave., in Fredonia. Please wear a mask. Social distancing will be required. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, services will be held for family and limited guests at Holy Trinity Church 1032 Central Ave., Dunkirk on Saturday, Oct. 3. Services to be officiated by the Rev. Daniel P. Walsh.
