Howard F. Johnson

Howard F. Johnson, 90, of Gerry, passed away Saturday, Sept. 12, 2020, at UPMC Hamot, Erie, Pa.

Born July 28, 1930 in Jamestown, he was a son of the late Arthur and Louise Schaefer Johnson. He was a 1949 graduate of Cassadaga Valley Central School.

Howard enjoyed work and his career was extensive, including Barmore Sellstrom, self-employed as a milk hauler, finisher at American Manufacturing, part-time plumber for Dudley Waters (while working other jobs) and a machinist at numerous shops including, Blackstone, Crescent Tool and for 36 years at MRC, retiring in 1993.

Howard was a 55 year, active member, of Sylvan Lodge 303 F&AM serving as master in 1986 and treasurer since 1972, Scottish Rite Bodies, Valley of Jamestown since 1972 and had served as thrice potent master and treasurer of Jamestown Lodge of Perfection and was presented the Dedicated Service Award by the Grand Master of the State of New York in 1995. He served as councilman/deputy supervisor on the Gerry Town Board from 1979-2004. He was a lifetime member of the Gerry Volunteer Fire Department serving for 50 years and stepping down in 2005, 67 year member of the Gerry United Methodist Church and served as trustee and past member of the Gerry Grange 412 and recipient of the Community Citizen Award (called Gerry’s Mr. “Fix it”) in 2001, trustee of the Gerry Hill Cemetery and served on the board of the United Methodist Gardens. Howard loved meeting with his friends for coffee twice a day at the Country Fair in Gerry.

Husband of 69 years to Patricia Heath Johnson, whom he married June 2, 1951; father of Mark of Vestal, Keith (Judy) of Cape Coral, Fla., Lance (Alexandra) and Terri Johnson, all of Gerry; grandfather of Marissa Sawyer, Shanna Labrador, Robert, Katie, Neil, Spencer, and Michael Johnson; great-grandfather of 10; brother of Arthea Clark of Gerry and the late Edith Yager and Rachel Tellinghuisen. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be private. A celebration of life is being planned and will be announced at a later date.
