Gilbert W. Snyder III

Gib was born in Dunkirk on Flag Day, June 14, 1980, to Claudia (Graves) and Gilbert Walter Snyder Jr., joining his sister, Jillian.

Gib was an avid learner, graduating from Dunkirk High School in 1998 and continuing his education, earning an associate’s degree from Jamestown Community College and then continuing on to SUNY Fredonia to earn dual bachelor’s degrees in history and social studies education and a master’s degree in teaching English as a second language.

As a sports reporter for the OBSERVER, one of Gib’s greatest joys was supporting local athletes. He truly valued the relationships he created and maintained with the wonderful athletes, coaches and spectators who befriended him as he walked the sidelines. Additionally, he also worked as a teacher for E2CC BOCES, as well as at the Cassadaga Job Corps. In Mesa, he worked at Albertsons Grocery Store and then as a member of the intitial loss reporting team at State Farm Insurance Agency.

In addition to his parents and sister, Jillian (Jason) Domenico, he is survived by his adoring nieces and nephew: Gabriella, Charles, Gracia, Emelia and Lucille Domenico.

“Little Gib” will be forever missed by his grandmother, Ann Snyder; and aunts and uncles: Charles Graves Jr., Sally Graves (Kurt Raths), Nancy and Bob Adams, Daniel and Sharon Snyder and William and Louise Snyder. He will be further bereaved by cousins: Ted, Chrissy, Michael, Scott, Casey, Daniel, Rachel, Jason, Matt, Saunsanie, Nevia and Jennasha.

Gib was predeceased by his grandparents: Gilbert Walter Snyder Sr., Charles and Florence Graves; and cousin, Ryan Snyder.

One of the truly remarkable aspects of Gib’s life was his deep and lasting friendships. The significance of the brotherhood that he shared with his “Arizona Angels,” DeShaun Troutman and Scott Ellman, was something that he valued and appreciated beyond measure. His wit, humor, understanding and compassion will be missed by the many who knew and loved him.

Gib was a devoted fan of the New York Yankees, Buffalo Bills, Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the Dunkirk Marauders. He was an animal lover who had a soft spot for all of the dogs in his younger life and the cats that followed.

Gib loved music, especially Pearl Jam, never missing an opportunity to see them, even if it meant driving for three or four hours to cross the border into Canada.

Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder truly said it best: “Can’t Find a Better Man.”

Onward to victory, Gibby!

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
