Fredora “Dorie” Mae (Mawhir) Manzella
PORTLAND — Fredora “Dorie” Mae (Mawhir) Manzella, 93, of Portland, N.Y., passed away peacefully on Thursday, Dec. 17, 2020, at home surrounded by her loving family.
She was born in Portland, N.Y., on Sept. 20, 1927, daughter of the late William and Reba (Sunday) Mawhir.
Dorie worked at Curtiss-Wright Aircraft Plant during World War II. She later worked as a local rural mail carrier and a town tax collector. She was a homemaker and owner of the family grape farm. She enjoyed working with stained glass, knitting and crocheting, crossword puzzles and more recently jigsaw puzzles. Dorie also loved baking cookies and always had a stash on hand for her many visitors. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Rural Carriers Association, and the Portland Fire Department Auxiliary.
Fredora is survived by her children: Rick Manzella, Michael (Nancy) Manzella, Thomas (Deanne) Manzella, Kathleen (Larry) Thies, Julie (Tim) Matthews and Robert (Katherine) Manzella. She is further survived by her loving grandchildren: Susan Manzella, Kevin (Becky) Bremer, Karen (Terry) Dellert, Kathie (Mike) Bremer, Brandon (Christin) Manzella, Andrew (Amber) Manzella, Javier Manzella-Lapeira (grandson-in-law), Jann Heyden, Elias (Amanda) Manzella, Sandra (Benjamin) Leichner, Nina Manzella, Peter Manzella, Melissa (Dan) Seavy, Marcus (Katie) Thies, Matthew (Kelly) Thies, Kevin (Chrissy) Matthews, Robb Matthews, Kimberly Manzella, Christopher Manzella, Tatiana Manzella.
She is also survived by many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; along with several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Dorie was predeceased by her husband, Lee Manzella; her daughter, Sandra (Manzella) Heyden; daughter-in-law Laura Manzella; her grandsons: Lee Manzella, Brian Heyden and Darren Manzella and her three siblings: William Mawhir, Vivian Burnside,and Roderick Mawhir.
Fredora is also preceded in death by her second husband, Lawrence McIntyre; and is survived by her step-children: Janice (Bill) Hipwell, Herb (Kathy) McIntyre and Ruth (late Jeff) Blackman; as well as her step-grandchildren: Laura Goulding, Matthew and Justin Jacques, Marla Kelly, Darren McIntyre, Danny and Clayton Blackman.
Funeral services and interment will be held privately for the immediate family only.
Funeral arrangements are being provided and cared for by the MORSE Funeral Home, 51 Highland Ave., Brocton, NY 14716.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers memorials in honor of Dorie be made to the Brocton and/or Portland Fire Departments.
