Frank J. Flagella, 74, of Fredonia, passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2021, at Brooks Memorial Hospital following a brief battle with cancer. He was born on March 1, 1946, in Dunkirk, N.Y., the son of the late Frank and Mildred (Ceranowicz) Flagella.
Frank was a graduate from Cassadaga High School in 1964 and The State University of New York at Canton in 1968. He joined the U.S. Army upon graduating from SUNY Canton in 1968 and received an honorable discharge in 1974. He was hired in 1975 to work for the Village of Fredonia Waste Water Treatment Plant in the maintenance department. Upon completion of his New York State Waste Water Operator Certification, Frank was promoted to the Chief Operator's Position in 1985 where he remained until his retirement in 2009.
Frank coached Fredonia Little League Girls' Softball and helped establish The Fredonia Little League's Challenger Division around 1990 which provided opportunities to handicapped children to participate in the sport of baseball. In his youth, he worked as a lifeguard at The Cassadaga Lake Beach. He also served as an umpire for the local baseball/softball programs, an official for track and field and an official for volleyball. Frank was a member of the American Legion Post 59 and The National Ski Patrol. Frank enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. His hobbies included swimming, camping, making stained-glass art, attending his grandsons' soccer games, concerts and musicals, working in his garage and on his home.
He is survived by: his wife, Barbara (St. George), whom he married on Oct. 23, 1971. He is also survived by his son: Michael (Kelly) Flagella of Oakland, Calif.; his daughter, Karen Flagella; his grandsons: Marcus and Jackson, all of Fredonia; his honorary granddaughter, Finley Rogerson, formerly of Fredonia. He is also survived by his siblings: Tom Flagella, Jim Flagella, Rosemary Hibbard, Cathy Tuminno and Marjorie Waite. Also surviving are numerous brothers and sisters-in-law and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
His death is preceded by: his parents; his brother, Patrick Flagella of Jamestown, N.Y.; his father-in-law, Anthony and mother-in-law, Nancy St. George; and his brothers-in-law, Nin and Don St. George, all of Fredonia, N.Y.
Calling hours will be Sunday from 2-4 p.m., at the LARSON-TIMKO Funeral Home, 20 Central Ave., Fredonia, N.Y. COVID regulations will be in effect. Please wear a mask and maintain six feet social distance. Capacity is limited due to COVID regulations, please expect delays. Funeral services will be private. Interment will be in St. Anthony's Cemetery, Fredonia.
