Marian G. Giambra

Marian G. “Red” Giambra, 91, of Dunkirk, died Friday morning (Jan. 22, 2021) at the Chautauqua Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Dunkirk.

He was born April 15, 1929, in Vandergrift, Pa., the son of the late Alexander and Josephine (Deforte) Giambra.

A lifelong Dunkirk resident, Marian served in the U.S. Navy from 1947-51. He had been employed as a machinist at Al Tech Specialty Steel Corp., retiring in 1991.

He was a member of Holy Trinity Church, Fredonia Beaver Club, and American Bowling Congress.

Marian was a devoted and loving husband and father. He was a quiet gentle man and was loved by all who knew him.

In his younger years, he was an avid hunter. He also loved to fish well into his 80s and could be found most summer nights at Cassadaga Lake.

In his later years, he developed a passion for bowling. At the age of 90 he was still bowling three times a week where he was surrounded by wonderful friends that meant so much to him.

He was happiest though on holidays and family gatherings when he was surrounded by his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include two daughters: Deborah L. (Thomas) Murphy of Dunkirk and Toni-Jo (Perry) Mitchell of Fredonia; one son, David (Rebecca) Giambra of Fredonia; six grandchildren: Michael (Renee) Murphy, Christopher (Odette) Giambra, Daniel Giambra, Jeffrey Mitchell, Laura (Charles) Brockhaus and Gina Mitchell; eight great-grandchildren: Shane Noah, Ciara, Gabriel, Sophia, Evan, Eli, Miles and Gage; one brother, Paul (Lillian) Giambra; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia (Tenamore) Giambra, who died Nov. 13, 1988; his grandson, Shane Joseph Murphy, on Jan. 30, 2001; four brothers, Alexander Jr., John, Samuel, and Charles Giambra; and two sisters, Lena Gullo and Jenny Barone.

A private family funeral service will be held at the McGrawKowal Funeral Home. Burial will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Sheridan.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Lakeshore Humane Society, 431 E. Chestnut St., Dunkirk, NY 14048.
