John Meyers

BMCM John E. Meyers, US Navy, Ret. 89, of Tiverton, RI, passed away on January 8, 2021 due to COVID-19.

John, or “Jack” as he was known to friends and family, was born in Dunkirk, NY to John N. Meyers and Johanna (Jozwiak) Meyers-Rozumalski.

Jack spent 26 years serving in the US Navy before retiring in 1974 with a ranking of Boatswain’s Mate Master Chief. He was then employed by General Dynamics, N. Kingstown, RI, until his retirement.

Jack was a member of the Tin Can Sailors and served as an usher at St. Christopher’s Church. He enjoyed playing pool.

Jack is preceded in death by wife and mother to his children, Ursula A. (Riley) Meyers, his second wife, Shirley J. (Murphy) Simmons-Meyers, his eldest daughter, Gale Vick, his grandson, Matthew Vick and his brother Robert Meyers.

He is survived by his daughters, Dawn Gagne (husband Jeffrey) of Colorado, Jane Walker (late husband Gary) of Connecticut, Kelly Chartier of Rhode Island and Johnna Schwartz (husband Jeffrey) of Rhode Island, his sister, Elizabeth “Betty” Korzeniewski and his brother, James Meyers (wife Joan). He is also survived by 13 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews, who all knew him as “Grumpy,” a name that affectionately described his outward military sternness, yet strikingly contradicted his true loving character.

Jack spent the past several years living at Brookdale Assisted Living in Tiverton, RI, among many friends. Jack was known to be very strong, both physically and of character. He survived many great personal losses, having years apart cared for both his wives through their cancer battles. Throughout all these struggles, he remained a strong patriarchal force to his family, by whom he will be greatly missed.
