Robert Thomas George

PORTLAND — Robert Thomas George, 94, of Portland, N.Y., passed away peacefully Sunday, Feb. 28, 2021, at the Chautauqua Nursing and Rehab Center — SNF following a brief illness. Ironically, his best friend Paul Rowe also passed this day.

Robert was born July 10, 1926, in Portland, N.Y., a son to the late Michael and Arline (Mead) George.

He proudly served his Country during WW II as a Sergeant in the US Army in the 35th Infantry 25th Division from 1944-1946 prior to his honorable discharge.

Robert worked for Klings Furniture in Mayville, N.Y., and retired from Lake Erie State Park as a ground’s person.

He was a loyal member of the Portland Fire Department for 68 years. During that time, he served as treasurer for 12 years and commissioner for 10 years. He also was a member of the Brocton American Legion Post 434 for 52 years.

Robert was an avid New York Yankees fan and loved to watch NASCAR races.

Survivors include his sister: Gertrude Shields; nieces and nephews: Cathie Lowe, Jessica (Mark) Heary, Ashlea and Mackenzie Heary; Justin (Danielle) Lowe; Janice (Scott) McAuley, Kristen and Jenny McAuley; Debbie (Bill) Lyon, Tom and Bob Lyon, stepson Donald (Donna) Pettit and children Cindy (Tyler) Graf and Michele (Keith) Gifford and their children Justin and Elizabeth. Close friends, Ron & Bonnie Bradley, Judy Fingerhut, Anita (Andy) Calcaterria, Bob (Pam) Remington, Myrna (Harry) Pugh, Linda Miller, and Karen (Doug) Belmondo and their son Bradley.

In addition to his parents, Robert was preceded in death by his wife Geraldine (Wester) George, his sister Anna Louise Newman, brother Charles George, brother-in-law Merle Shields and infant niece Suzanne Shields.

Friends and family may call at the MORSE FUNERAL HOME, 51 Highland Avenue, Brocton, NY Thursday, March 4, 2021, from 2-4 pm. Following the guidelines and protocols in place, masks must be worn and social distancing observed. Funeral services will be held Friday, March 5, 2021, at 2 p.m. from the funeral home with the Rev. Charles Robertson officiating. Burial will follow in Portland Evergreen Cemetery where full military honors will be accorded.
