Sharon Elizabeth (McIntyre) Morrison

FREDONIA — Sharon Elizabeth (McIntyre) Morrison, age 78, of Fre-donia, N.Y., passed away Sunday, Feb. 28, 2021, at Mercy Hospital in South Buffalo.

Sharon was a life-long resident of Chautauqua County. She was born in Jamestown, N.Y., and gra-duated from Dunkirk High School. In 1964, she and her husband, Larry, pur-chased their first and for-ever home in Fredonia, where her husband contin-ues to reside today.

Sharon became an Amer-ican Red Cross lifeguard at the age of 15 and attended Aquatic School to become a Water Safety Instructor.

When her family was young, Sharon worked in the grapes alongside her husband and as a substitute teacher, while continuing to lifeguard and teach learn-to-swim lessons. Later, she transitioned to working in aquatics full-time, including, teach-ing adapted aquatics, coaching a special Olym-pics swim team, leading adult Acquacize classes, and as a NYSPHSAA swimming official.

Sharon enjoyed playing tennis, often partnering with her husband, and bowling, teaming with her mother-in-law, Dorie Morrison. Other interests included playing BINGO, and watching the Buffalo Bills football and Syracuse basketball. Sharon was also an excellent cook and some of her family’s favorites in-cluded her “Black Magic” cake, potato salad, pasta sauce, Texas Hots sauce, Swedish rice pudding, and pizza.

Influenced by her father, Sharon developed a love of music early in life and learned to play the oboe, saxophone, timpani drums, and cymbals. In the early 1960’s, she played the oboe with the White Eagle Band and began to teach herself to play the keyboard and flute. In 2005, she be-came one of the 25 original members of the New Hor-izon Band at SUNY, Fredo-nia and later also joined the Cassadaga Area Concert Band, remaining active in both groups until the Pan-demic last spring. During these years she also worked on the NHB Scrapbooking committee and attended music camps at Chautauqua Institution.

After surviving breast cancer for the second time, Sharon began knitting prayer shawls for the American Cancer Society to be distributed though out the local area. She also knit afghans and sweaters for family and friends com-memorating births and gra-duations, or just because she knew someone would appreciate the gesture.

Sharon was a life-long member of the St. John’s Episcopal Church in Dun-kirk, serving as a Sunday School Teacher and on the Vestry.

In addition to her parents, Roy and Marge McIntyre, she was preceded in death by her brothers Tim (Paula) McIntyre and Mike McIntyre.

Sharon is survived by her loving husband of 59 years, Larry Morrison; sister Mat-tie (Claudia) McIntyre; children Kim Gates, Bonnie Morrison, Dave (Kate) Morrison, and Julie (Glenn) Putcher; grandchildren Chris (Jenny) Gates, Stu (Holly) Gates, Dillon (Sam) Putcher, Kayde (Pete Fitzgerald) Putcher, Jess (Scot) Laurie, Nick Putch-er, Leah Morrison, and Taylor Morrison; and great–grandchildren Piper Gates, Parker Gates, Avery Laurie, Arlo Putcher, and Maisie Laurie; and her best friend and honorary family aunt, Barb Custer.

As her father-in-law, Murf Morrison, bought ” retirement property on the avenue” some 80 years ago, a Memorial Service will be held at a later date at Willowbrook Cemetery, Central Avenue, Dunkirk, N.Y .

In her true spirit of shar-ing, Sharon was an organ donor, willing to help any-one in need, even after her passing.
