Viola “Bid” Mae McFadden

PORTLAND — Viola “Bid” Mae McFadden went to be with her Lord and Savior March 22, 2021.

Viola was born February 2, 1932 in Dunkirk, NY the daughter to the late Ivan A. and Mary Frances (Oakes) McFadden. At the time of her death she was a resident of Heritage Green in the town of Ellery, NY.

Viola had been handicapped since birth. She was affectionately known to family and friends as “Bid.” She was faithfully taken care of by her parents until her father’s death in 1997 and her mother’s death in 2008.

Viola attended the Crippled Children’s Guild in Buffalo, NY where she received her education.

In 1997 after her father’s death, a home care agency felt that Viola and her mom could use more assistance and was referred to Aspire of WNY, with Lisa VandeVelde being her Care Coordinator.

In 2008, Viola, with help from her brother Larry, donated her home to Aspire of WNY so that she could live out her days in the home that she lived in since 1935. A promise which was kept by Larry to his father.

On December 19, 2020, a fire destroyed her home. With the assistance from her aide, Danielle and upstairs friend Cassaundra and her daughter Aria, all were saved without injury.

Viola was a faithful member of the Portland Congregational Church.

In addition to her parents, Viola was preceded in death by a brother, Ivan “Sonny” McFadden.

She is survived by her brother Larry (Roxanne) McFadden, nephew Scott (Bonnie) McFadden, great-nephew and niece Chase and Teagan. She is also survived by several cousins.

Family and friends are invited to call at the Portland Congregational Church today, March 25, 2021 from 10-11 am where funeral services will be begin there at 11 am with Rev. Gordon Spiller and Rev. Josh Ehmke officiating. Private burial will follow in Portland Evergreen Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, any charitable contributions in honor of Viola can be made to the Portland Congregational Church, 8649 Church Street, Portland, NY 14769.
