Gordon Munson

PORTLAND — Gordon Munson, 85, of Ellicott Road, Portland, N.Y., passed away peacefully Wednesday, Sept. 15, 2021, at the Chautauqua Nursing and Rehab Facility, in Dunkirk, N.Y., following an extended illness.

Gordon was born Aug. 17, 1936, in Dunkirk, N.Y., a son to the late Kenneth and Helen (Salhoff) Munson.

He attended Brocton Central School and then served his country in the armed forces during the Korean conflict.

He was a 35-year veteran in fire service as a member of the Portland Volunteer Fire Department and had also served as fire chief there.

He had been a member of the Hose 1 and Hose 4 Drum and Bugle Corps in Dunkirk, N.Y., and was a past member of the Barbershoppers and Barbershop Quartet.

Gordon was employed by Greater Buffalo Press, Don Frame Trucking, and retired from the New York State Thruway Authority following 25 years of service. He was a lifelong parishioner of the Portland Congregational Church of Portland, N.Y.

On April 25, 1975, Gordon married, Beverly “Peg” Munson and were married 46 years.

Gordon is survived by his loving wife, and his children: Cynthia Munson-Lillie and Mark Munson; his loving stepchildren: Dave Lillie, Chuck Lillie, and Verona Boardman

In addition to his parents, Gordon was preceded in death by his sister, Ruth Battagl. No prior visitation will be observed. Gordon graciously donated his body to the University of Buffalo Anatomical Gift Program. A memorial service with burial will be announced at a later date.
