BROCTON – Betsy J. ‘ Bets’ Furman, 66, of Brocton, N.Y., passed away peacefully Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2021, in Brooks Memorial Hospital following a lengthy illness.

Betsy was born Dec. 19, 1954, in Erie, Pa., the daughter of the late Robert and Dolores (Braley) Riefstahl.

She owned and operated the St. Stephen’s Hotel in Brocton, N.Y., for 25 years with her husband, Brian C. Furman, who preceded her in death on Sept. 16, 2018. Betsy had resided in Brocton most of her life. In her later years, she was a peer coach at the Ahira Hall Memorial Library in Brocton, where she helped seniors learn to use the computer. While there, Betsy became a member of a writer’s group where she contributed in the writing of two books, “Here In This Time or Place” and “Here Again.”

Betsy was an avid fan of Star Trek and loved being around cats and helping an-mals. She also enjoyed watching the reality tv shows. Survivor and Big Brother. But most of all she enjoyed spending time with her children and her only grandson, she enjoyed watching or playing games with them such as The Legend of Zelda and Animal Crossing.

Betsy is survived by her three children” Justin (Alicia), Sarah (Philip), and Matt Furman; and her grandson, Jacob, for she loved them all very dearly; and her beloved sisters: Kathleen (Syd) Farnham and Mary (David) Holzwasser; and sister-in- law, Cindy Riefstahl. Several nieces and nephews further survive.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brother, Robert B. Riefstahl, who died in February of this year.

A celebration of life will be held in Betsy’s honor on Oct. 16, 2021, at the Brocton American Legion, 110 W. Main St., Brocton, NY 14716, from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m., all are welcome.
