Army Chief Warrant Officer Two (CW2) Michael R. Mitchell, 58, of Dunkirk, died Tuesday morning (Nov. 9, 2021) at home following a lengthy illness.
He was born Jan 5, 1963, in Westfield, the son of the late Ronald and Sandra (Densmore) Mitchell.
Michael was a graduate of Brocton Central High School, class of 1982. He was an alumni of Norfolk State University and Norfolk, Va. Police Academy 1987 and attended SUNY Fredonia.
U.S. Army veteran, he served in the U.S. Navy rom 1982-85, U.S. Army Reserves 231st Transportation Co. and 824th Heavy Boat Trans. Co., Army 2003-07, honorable discharge as a CW2 Marine Deck Officer and Boat Captain. While in service decorations included Navy and Marine Expeditionary Commendation Medals (Beirut/Lebanon/Grenada), National Defense Service Medal with Bronze Star, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Kuwait/Iraq Campaign Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon and others.
Before transferring to the U.S. Army, he worked for the Norfolk Police Department, Pinellas County, Fla., and was a civilian marine boat mechanic at MacDill Airfare Base.
He was a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church, former VC of Veterans of Foreign Wars John T. Murray Post 1017, and a social member of Club 929 Knights of Columbus.
Music was a great escape for Michael and he continued to play piano, guitar and drums until his death. For a short time before moving to Florida he owned and operated Twilight Entertainment Services and Karaoke.
Survivors include his son, Michael Angelo Mitchell of Dunkirk; one sister, Yvonne (Michael) Burgun of Brocton; one brother, Ronald (Kim) Mitchell of Portland; nieces and nephew: Brandon (Tara) Mitchell, Carly (Al) Davis and Meghan Courtney.
