Jack Edward Shubert

Jack embodied a unique combination of joie de vivre, generosity and intellect. While his fun loving nature may have been his leading characteristic, his sharp mind led him to logic games, crossword puzzles and kakuro. It also helped him recall almost every golf hole he ever played, important sports statistics and race results. He was generous with his time and talent, always willing to correct a golf swing – even while in a restaurant; teach you how to handicap a horse; or help a student find a first job.

A consummate teacher and storyteller, whether at school, the golf course, or sitting on a bar stool, Jack truly shined when surrounded by a group of family, friends, or students. Having inherited storytelling from his own father, there was no situation for which he didn’t have a fun anecdote or memory. His classes at Dunkirk High were always full; the students loved him as much as he loved them. He relished their successes and they often grew up to become lifelong friends.

Jack served as the golf professional at Shorewood Country Club for 48 years. Golf was his passion from the age of 14. He learned to play as a caddy at Edgewood Country Club in Pittsburgh and fashioned a three hole course in his back yard. He played on both the Turtle Creek High School and IUP College golf teams. He was an amazing player, but nothing meant more to him than the Shorewood Junior Golf Program. He was passionate about growing the next generation of golfers and using the game of golf to develop the characteristics of integrity, responsibility and perseverance. He relished the many, many friendships he developed through the game and watching his junior players develop long-lasting relationships with each other. In 2021, the Shorewood Pro Shop was named “The House That Jack Built” in his honor. Think of Jack every time you see someone with the classic Shubert Swing.

Jack will be missed by his community friends and family, including his brother James (Alice) Shubert and his sister Janet (Larry) Toth, his four children Lauren Shubert, Erin (John) Russell, Colleen (Mike) Mecredy, and Jack Shubert, Jr., his seven grandchildren, as well as “Jack’s kids,” the dozens of kids who worked for him over the years at the Shorewood Country Club Pro Shop, who were just as much his family.

The family will be receiving friends from 2 – 4 p.m. on Sunday, June 26, 2022, at Shorewood Country Club.

The Jack Shubert Love of Golf Scholarship Fund has been set up to help open the game to young golfers.
