Elizabeth J. “Betty Jo” Johengen
GOWANDA, N.Y. — Elizabeth J. “Betty Jo” Johengen ,77, of Gowanda, N.Y., went to be with the angels on Wednesday June 29, 2022, at Buffalo General Hospital, surrounded by her loved ones.
She was born Nov. 5, 1944, in Gowanda, N.Y., the daughter of the late John S. and Babs (Madeleine Noecker) Reid.
She is also survived by three brothers: John R. (Monica), Robert (Nancy) and Martin (Nancy) Reid; and four sisters: Barbara Jean (Ed) Oswalt, Rebecca (Allan) Mowry, Monica (Alan) Hall and Paula Rosen; and sisters-in-law: Marilyn Reid and Liz (Robert) Guglielmi; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by two brothers: David and Anthony Reid.
On Nov. 27, 1965 she married Mike Johengen, her loving husband of 56 years, and is also survived by a son, Christopher (Rosanne) Johengen; a daughter, Catherine Johengen; and two grandchildren: Cooper and Lilith.
Mrs. Johengen was a 1961 graduate of Cardinal Mindszenty High school, Gowanda State Hospital School of Nursing in 1965 and earned a Bachelor of Health Care Science from Chapman College, Orange, Calif. She worked as a psychiatric nurse at Gowanda Psychiatric Center, Providence Hospital in Anchorage, Alaska, and Prince George’s Hospital in Maryland. Mrs. Johengen followed her husband who was a career U.S. Air Force officer of 23 years all around the country and in Japan. She was always active in the parish where they lived and served as an eucharistic minister at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church in Gowanda, N.Y., and was a longtime blood donor. She enjoyed spending time with family, connecting with friends, gardening and reading novels.
She noted her life was quite a journey and she enjoyed all the side trips with so many of you. Please be kind to each other, you never know what someone is going through.
Friends may call at the Mentley Funeral Home Inc. 105 E. Main St., in Gowanda, N.Y., on Tuesday, July 5, 2022 from 4-8 p.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be said on Wednesday, July 6, 2022, at 11a.m., from St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church in Gowanda, N.Y.
Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church.
