David August Hindman

PORTLAND — David August Hindman, 76, of Portland, passed away at his home on Thursday, Oct. 20, 2022, following a lengthy illness.

He was born Oct. 1, 1946, in Westfield, N.Y., the son of the late Joseph C. and C. Arlene Wilmarth Hindman.

Dave was a 1965 graduate of Brocton Central School. He then proudly served his country in the Vietnam War while serving in the U.S. Army. After he returned, he ran his own dairy farm for over 20 years. He also worked for Kraft Foods Inc. in Dunkirk, N.Y., Aero Industries in Hartfield, N.Y., where he was the plant manager, Purina in Dunkirk, N.Y., Cliffstar in Dunkirk, N.Y., where he was a second shift supervisor, and then for Better Baked Foods in North East, Pa., and Westfield, N.Y.

Dave was a member of the Brocton Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher. He enjoyed dairy farming, gardening, reading, word finds, and traveling and was a gifted artist. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family.

He is survived by his loving wife, Susan Smith Hindman, whom he married Feb. 3, 1968 in Portland, N.Y.; his son, Craig (Brette) Hindman of Dewittville, N.Y.; a daughter; Dawn (Steven) Swanson of Kennedy, N.Y.; six grandchildren: David Hindman of North East, Pa., Molly Hindman of Green Castle, Pa., Clara (Seth) Byard of Pittsburgh, Pa., Elizabeth Lombardo of Kennedy, N.Y., Laura (Tyler) Phillips of Jersey City, N.J., and Janie Swanson of Rochester, N.Y.; two great-grandchildren: Scarlett and Gracelynn Lombardo; a brother; Harry Hindman of Brocton, N.Y.; a sister, Susan TenBroeck of Latham, N.Y.; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, William Hindman.

Friends are welcome to call on Tuesday, Oct. 25, 2022, from 4-7 p.m., at the Freay Funeral Home in Mayville (139 S. Erie St).

The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2022, at the Brocton Baptist Church (33 W. Main St, Brocton, NY 14716). The Rev. Larry Morrison will officiate. Burial will be in the Dewittville Cemetery where military honors will be provided by the Brocton American Legion Post 434.
