Roy A. “Mooney” Harrington
Roy A. “Mooney” Harrington, 90, of Fredonia, NY passed away Saturday April 22, 2023 at St. Vincent Hospital in Erie, PA., after a short illness.
Mooney was born October 14, 1932 in Mexico, New York, son of the late Franklin and Lola Mick Harrington. His family moved to the Fredonia area when he was a small child. While in the second grade, his teacher gave him the nickname “Mooney”, a name he proudly carried and was so well known by his entire life. He was both a United States Navy Veteran and United States Army Veteran. In 1968 he established Mooney’s Backhoe Services. When his son Craig joined him in the business, Moon & Sun Backhoe Services was formed. Mooney, a hard worker his entire life, worked at Allegheny Ludlum Steel Corp., Special Metals Corp., and Enviro Gas to list a few of the places he worked. Along the way, he also found time to pick grapes. Later in life he drove for Shults Resale Center. He finally “officially” retired at the age of 89!
While Mooney always enjoyed working hard, he also enjoyed the casinos. He had a “favorite seat” at the Allegheny Seneca Casino in Salamanca. Mooney enjoyed meeting family and friends at “The Club”, the Country Fair at Rt. 60 & Rt. 20, where he could be found on a regular basis, almost daily. Also active in the community, Mooney was Past President of the Chautauqua County Fair Association, a member of the Fredonia Memorial American Legion Post 52, and Life Member of the Fredonia Fire Department. Above all, he was a kind, loving and gregarious person. He will be missed by his family, his many friends and the community.
Mooney is survived by: his son, Craig (Wendy) Harrington of Fredonia; his daughter, Donna Harrington of Cassadaga; grandchildren: Brynn (Brian) Gray and Kara Faso, all of Palm Beach, FL; three great-grandchildren: Natalie, Braxton and Avery.
Besides his parents, Mooney is predeceased: by his wife, Janet McNeight Harrington, who passed 18 years ago. The couple had been married 53 years at the time of her passing. Also predeceased by his daughter, Debra Harrington Beaman and longtime companion, his dog, Digger.
Memorials contributions in Mooney’s memory made be made to the Chautauqua County Fair Association, P.O. Box 191, Dunkirk, NY 14048.
A Celebration of Life Service will be announced and held at a later date.
