BROCTON – Amanda Spiller, 33, of Brocton, NY passed away peacefully in the early hours of September 3, 2023, at home with loved ones, following a long battle with cancer where she had defeated all odds.

Amanda was born June 30, 1990, in Westfield, NY, the daughter of James and Yvonne (Ellsworth) Burtner.

She received her New York State High School Regents Diploma with Honors from Brocton Central School in 2008. She started her undergraduate at Saint Lawrence University and completed her bachelor’s degree in Geology at SUNY Fredonia. Additionally, she led a life and career filled with love and serving others. Amanda impacted all who crossed her path. She worked as a teacher at James Irwin Charter School in the Power Technical Early College division in Colorado, her home away from home. During her four years there she became thehead of the science department, while she taught 6 -12 th grade students in areas of discipline such as Physical Science and Character Class, her true passion was teaching Earth Science.

Amanda had a passion for volleyball which she played during her high school years and was able to then share that passion with her students by teaching it. During the summers, she worked at the Eleven Mile State Park in Colorado and enjoyed viewing God’s creation there and felt a special bond to nature and those she worked with there. When she was in New York, she was a teller at Community Bank in Westfield and head cashier at Valu Home Center in Fredonia where she loved serving her customers with excellence and a smile.

Her Christian faith was evident throughout her life. She helped to lead youth group at the Portland Congregational Church where she was an active member and a mentor to many of the teens in the church, for which they gave her the honorary and affectionate title of “Aunt Amanda”. She helped with many community outreach programs and she served in many other capacities, such as Sunday School teacher, worship team, and anywhere else there was a need.

When Amanda found time and energy to do so, she enjoyed volleyball, ice skating, rollerblading traveling, camping, hiking, fishing, kayaking, astronomy, crafting and playing games, hosting parties and bonfires for family and friends, performing and watching theater, listening and singing to a wide variety of music. But most of all, she loved spending time with her family and church family.

Amanda is survived by her husband of eleven years, Jason Spiller, her father James Burtner, her mother Yvonne Burtner (Ellsworth), sisters Cierra Burtner and Katie Meegan, nephew Elijah Burtner, grandparents Cheryl/Ed Overstreet, and David Ellsworth, mother-in-law Denise Spiller, sister-in-law Ginger (the late Robert) Johnson; and brothers-in- law Rev. James Spiller, Jonathan (Kris) Spiller, and nephews Tyler Spiller, Austin Spiller, Derek Spiller, Cameron Spiller, and nieces Stacey (Spiller) Cortina, Victorya (Spiller) Blanchette, McKellan (Spiller) Dwyer, Andrea Spiller and Zoe Spiller, and many others as well.

Amanda was preceded in death by her grand- parents; Charles/Barbara Burtner (Barabasz), and great grandmother Beatrice Burtner, her in-laws Gordon/Cheryl Spiller, and Grandmother Lois DeHaven, and many others as well.

A Celebration of Life Ceremony will be held at Portland Congregational Church at 8649 Church Street, Portland, NY 14769, on Friday, September 8, 2023, at 5pm.
