Louis D. “Lou” Carvalho, 85, of Fredonia, NY, died Saturday December 9, 2023 at Brooks Memorial Hospital after an extended illness.

Lou was born April 21, 1938 in Peekskill, NY, the son of the late Louis and Helen Mohlsick Carvalho. He served in the United States Air Force as a statistician. Lou married Loralee Keifer in 1962. He graduated from SUNY Fredonia with a Masters in Elementary Education.

He was a teacher at Silver Creek Elementary School from 1968 to 1999 and was a substitute teacher for many years after his retirement in 1999. Lou “Loved Fredonia”. He served on the Fredonia Parks Commission, the Chautauqua County Parks Commission, the Gardner Street Playground Committee, and the Ice Skating Rink at Russell Joy Park Committee.

Lou was an Associate Judge for the Village of Fredonia, a SUNY Fredonia Safety Correctional Judge, served as a Marshall for PGA tournaments and was a Life Member of the Fredonia Beaver Club. Lou loved to play golf. He was a member of the Tri-County Country Club. He spent many winters at the Villages, Florida where he spent much of his time playing golf or playing pickle ball. Lou was a member of the Fredonia First United Methodist Church where he served on the Building and Grounds Committee.

Lou is survived by: his wife, Loralee Carvalho, of Fredonia; daughter, Amy Minor and son-in-law, Timothy Harley, of Frederick, MD; grandchildren: Samantha Harley and Emily Harley, both of Frederick, MD; Brittany Carvalho, of Ashtabula, OH, Joshua Carvalho and Kameron Carvalho, both of Clearwater, FL; brothers: Andrew Carvalho, of Beacon, NY and Joseph Carvalho, of LaGrange, NY; sisters: Ann Marie Hampson, of Pleasant Valley, NY and Rosemary Nolan, of AZ.

Beside his mother and father, Lou is predeceased by his son, William “Bill” Carvalho. The family expresses thanks and gratitude to Pastor Nettie Puleff, their friends and neighbors for the many cards and food. Also the 3B staff at Brooks Memorial Hospital and the staff at the Chautauqua Nursing Home for the care and kindness extended to their family.

Visitation will be Thursday from 1 pm – 2 pm at the Fredonia First United Methodist Church, 25 Church St. Fredonia, followed by a funeral service at the church at 2pm.
