Peter Whitney Strong

Peter Whitney Strong, 99, of Somers, New York, died on November 14, 2023, after a brief illness.

He was born on May 7, 1924, in Kenmore, New York, son of James and Hildegarde (Maytum) Strong.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 37 years, Emily Palfini Strong, his cousin Robert (Marilyn) Maytum of Fredonia, New York, as well as many nieces, nephews, family, and friends.

Peter had a long and successful career in the telecommunications industry and enjoyed a career as an engineer with various phone companies. He worked for Bell Telephone in New York City for most of his career, from where he would eventually retire. Peter was well known in the Fredonia area and served as part of the ownership and a former Board Member of the Dunkirk & Fredonia Telephone Company and Cassadaga Telephone Corporation, serving from 1988 to 1996. He made many visits to the Fredonia area throughout the years for both business and visits with the Maytum family, especially his Aunt Gertrude Garland who he visited frequently in the years following the death of his mother Hildegarde Maytum Strong.

Peter was an avid cross-country skier, cyclist, hiker, and Buffalo Bills fan. He spent many summers water skiing on beautiful Cassadaga Lake, one of his favorite places to enjoy the sport, as he spent many summers in Fredonia with Robert and Marilyn Maytum and other family members locally. He was also a long-time member of the Episcopal Church in his hometown of Somers, New York.

He proudly served his country in WWII with the rank of Private First Class. He served in Germany and when that war ended was then stationed on a ship that went to Japan. When that war ended, he returned to Germany and was assigned to guard prisoners. At 99 years old, he was one of the oldest living veterans of WWII.

Services were private in accordance with Peter’s wishes. Military services were conducted with private burial in Great Barrington, MA.
