Ruth L. FitzGerald

Life-long resident and Dunkirk native Ruth Marion Langenstein FitzGerald, residing at the Chautauqua Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Temple Road, Dunkirk died Thursday, November 30, 2023 in Brooks Hospital after a brief illness. She was 98 years old.

She was the daughter of the late Joseph W. Langenstein and Amelia B. Kolb of Dunkirk. Ruth was born September 30, 1925 in Dunkirk.

Mrs. FitzGerald was a graduate of the former St. Mary’s Academy in Dunkirk. After high school, she was employed for many years as a secretary at True Temper Co. located on Lake Shore Drive East in Dunkirk.

She was an active member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church, Dunkirk. Mrs. FitzGerald was also an accomplished bowler and a member of several local teams over the years. She was also a stalwart bingo player and an enthusiastic bridge player who teamed with many local partners.

In addition to her parents and seven siblings, Mrs. FitzGerald was preceded in death by her husband John G. “Yogi” FitzGerald, her daughter Lynn F. Riley (Denis) and son John H. FitzGerald (Amy).

She is survived by her grandsons Patrick F. Riley of Los Angeles, California, Kevin J. Riley (Sandra) of Needham Heights, Massachusetts, John Henry FitzGerald of Maryland, three great-grandchildren and numerous relatives in the Flick, Giacchino, Kawski, Langen, Langenstein, Rusch, Schober, Tynan and VanDenVouver families living in WNY, Rochester and Erie, Pennsylvania.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church, Washington Ave., Dunkirk at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday December 28, 2023. The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the Lakeshore Humane Society, Dunkirk, NY.
