Robert R. Reid
Robert R. Reid, 94, of Pomfret died Jan. 7 at the Chautauqua Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Mr. Reid was the youngest of five children of the late Allan G. and Sylvia (Holbrook) Reid and lived in the hamlet of Laona for more than 80 years.
He grew up attending school in the white clapboard schoolhouse across the road from his house, playing basketball in the schoolyard, and attending church around the corner at Laona Methodist Church. He left home only once, in the early 1950s, to serve in the U.S. Army in Korea during the so-called “forgotten war,” an experience he himself never forgot.
For many years, Mr. Reid was employed by the late Leslie Straight at Straight’s mink farm in Shumla. After he retired, he was a dedicated caregiver for his mother and, later, for his older sister, Marjorie.
He enjoyed reading and watching mysteries when he could not be working outside. His wry sense of humor came through in person and in his choice of silly cards he liked to send on birthdays. He never asked anything of others but was a good neighbor, a good brother and a fun-to-be-around uncle.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Reid was predeceased by his sisters, Marjorie Reid, Jane Woods and Marilyn Buckley; his brother, Allan Reid Jr.; and two nephews.
He is survived by several nieces and nephews.
Services will be private at Mr. Reid’s request. Burial will be in Laona Cemetery.
