Joan Elaine (Schade) Guzik

Joan Elaine (Schade) Guzik, 93, of Dunkirk, New York passed away peacefully on February 25, 2024 of natural causes. She was at the Dunkirk Rehabilitation and Nursing Home where she had been living the past 4 years.

Joan was born on Aug. 6, 1930, in Dunkirk NY, one of four children of William and Adelaide (Diefenbach) Schade.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Peter Paul Guzik; her husband, Bernard F. Guzik; and her sister, Virginia (Schade) Eastman.

She is survived by her sister, Sally (Schade) Kingsley of Dunkirk, NY; her brother, John W. Schade of Partlow, VA; her stepdaughter, Patricia Guzik (NV); her daughter-in-law Barbara (Zingaro) Guzik of Syracuse; and two granddaughters, Hillary (Guzik) Jung of NYC and Jody (Guzik) Hauck of Buffalo and several nieces and nephews.

Joan graduated from Dunkirk High School, class of 1948. Before and after graduation she worked in various retail jobs before meeting her husband-to-be Benard (Benny/Danny) Guzik. They were married in December 1953 in NYC. They lived in Washington, DC and NYC for a short time before returning to Dunkirk, NY where they put down roots and remained, except for a short stay in Orchard Park. While back in Dunkirk, Joan found her calling as an AVON Lady for over 40 years, winning many sales awards.

Joan was known as a kind and giving person with a warm heart and smile, whose greatest joy was helping others. She loved her family and many friends. Among those friends, she counted her AVON customers, some multi-generational. Over the years AVON became a labor of love. She enjoyed the monthly visits with her AVON family . . . so many of whom became lifetime friends.

Joan was a longtime member of the Catholic Church but after becoming home bound she enjoyed watching the Dr. Charles Stanley ministries on TV. She was also a member of the Dunkirk Moose Club and the Kosciuszko Club.
