James D. Monaco

James D. Monaco, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on April 13, 2024, in Clarksville, VA.

He was born on September 21, 1947, in Westfield, NY, to Joseph and Jean (Hartmann) Monaco, who preceded him in death.

James, often referred to as Jim, was a man whose life was filled with the love of family, service, and the joy of simple pleasures. Jim shared 26 years of marriage with his wife, Arlene Auge Monaco, creating a blended family filled with love and memories. He was a guiding force in the lives of his children, Michael Monaco of Jamestown, NY, Lisa Monaco of Erie, PA, Brenda (Ryan) Horan of Jamestown, NY, James (Rhonda) Monaco Jr. of Walnut Cove, NC, and his stepchildren, Jan (Steve) Bittinger of Sherman, NY, and Wanda (Tim) Ferguson of Suffolk, VA. As a proud grandfather, he cherished every moment spent with his grandchildren Nathan, Shelby, Destiny, Austin, Megan, Erin, Hunter (Belle), Joey, and Jada, and his great-grandchildren, Raelynn and Penelope Grace. Survived by his siblings, Valerie Monaco of Bothell, WA, Joseph Monaco of Erie, PA, John (Linda) Monaco of Fredonia, NY, Janice (Joe) Russo of Westfield, NY, and Judy (Doug) Izard of Traverse City, MI, Jim was a cherished brother and a treasured uncle to his many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Also survived by many close friends.

Following his graduation from Westfield Academy, Jim honorably served his country as a Jet Fuel Specialist in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War. After his military service, he returned to civilian life as a truck driver in the Teamsters Union and a mechanic for CARTS in Jamestown, NY. His expertise and unwavering work ethic were recognized and appreciated by all who worked alongside him. Jim’s interests spoke volumes about the man he was. He had a special connection with the Earth as a master gardener, able to make anything bloom with vibrant life. An avid fisherman, he found solace by the water and enjoyed the peaceful pastime of feeding and watching birds in his yard. His innate ability to fix anything that was broken extended beyond objects to touching the lives of his friends and neighbors with kindness and support. A man of faith, Jim went to be with our Lord while leaving behind a legacy of love, perseverance, and generosity. His greatest love was always for his family and our Lord, and those who knew him will deeply feel his absence. As we say farewell, we celebrate Jim’s well-lived life and the countless ways he enriched our days. James D. Monaco will be profoundly missed by many, as his influence and the lessons he imparted endure in the hearts of his loved ones.

A private graveside service with full military honors will be held at the convenience of the family.
