Sonia Martinez, age 75, a long-time resident of Dunkirk, NY, passed away peacefully on April 3, 2024, in Dunkirk, NY with her loving family at her side.

Born on May 14, 1948, to the late Alejandro Lopez and Rufina Rosado, Sonia was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who touched the lives of many with her kindness and grace.

Sonia was married to the late Diego Martinez, with whom she shared 40 wonderful years.

She is survived by her adoring children, Diana Done, Risel Martinez, and Elizabeth Martinez.

Sonia’s legacy extends to her cherished grandchildren, Diana Santiago, Sonia Ortiz, Jesse Alfaro, Risel Alfaro and Alexzavior Vazquez, as well as her great-grandchildren, Fred Santiago Jr. and JuneAllyz Santiago.

Her role as a homemaker was one she embraced with love and dedication, creating a warm and welcoming home for all who entered. Many that remember Sonia know that she took pride in making her infamous pasteles during the holiday season. Sonia would share stories about how her pasteles won the heart of her husband and her pasteles were a reminder of how they fell in love. Sonia was also passionate about sharing the love of the lord with others. She prioritized participation in a faith community and was actively involved in her local church. Once her health began to decline it limited her physical involvement with her congregation but her spiritual connection never waivered. A loyal servant of god, Sonia was dedicated to playing worship music, reading her bible and watching her worship programs in between a few of her favorite novelas (Spanish soap operas).

Sonia’s joy for spending time with her family was evident in the countless memories and traditions she established, leaving behind a legacy of family unity and shared moments of happiness.

Predeceased by her siblings,Olga, Norma, Victor, Ida, Angelina, Ruben, Nilda, Judith, Yolanda, Idaliz, and Sammy. Sonia is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins who will continue to honor her memory through the lessons of love and perseverance she instilled in them.

Sonia’s remarkable life and unwavering spirit will be profoundly missed yet forever remembered by those fortunate enough to have known her and shared in her journey.

Relatives and friends may visit Iglesia Getsemani Assembly of God, located at 115 Central Ave, Dunkirk NY on Friday April 12, from 7:00 to 8:30 PM. Sonia will be interred in Saint Mary’s Cemetery in Dunkirk, NY.
