Mary T. Wode

Mary T. Wode

Mary Teresa of Irving, NY joined Our Lord at the age of 96, passing away peacefully at home surrounded by her family’s love. Her parents Harry and Mary Seymour immigrated to Buffalo from Toronto, Canada. Mary Teresa was born on a lovely spring day in South Buffalo, NY.

Mary’s parents, her sister Louise, brothers Rev. Francis, Paul, and Edward Seymour predeceased her.

Mary Teresa, “Terry” (by Bob’s family) married Robert Wode on Aug. 26, 1950, and they raised nine children together: Bob (Bev),Kathy (Jeff) Williams, Mary Lou of NJ, Tim (Mary K), Peg (Gary) of CT, Albert, Beth (Mark) Butterwegge of MO, Eileen (Karl Schurkus) and Larry (Laurie) of OH.

In 1967, she began work on the line at Fisher Price Toys. Eventually, Mary became the Supervisor of Data Entry a position she held until her retirement in 1982. There she built lasting friendships.

Being a woman of great faith, she was proud to serve as one of the first laity Eucharistic Ministers in 1979. Mary believed so deeply in the truth of Jesus, she chose to share and instill it in others. This required Mary Teresa to complete 35 credits at Villa Maria and St. Catherine of Seina. Mary Teresa taught and supervised the confirmation program at 14 Holy Helpers from 1981 – 1992 until she moved to Sunset Bay. There she continued her passion, teaching at Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Silver Creek.

Mary loved to keep up on current events reading newspapers, magazines and was a voracious reader of books. Her hobbies were sewing, gardening, and playing games with the kids and grandkids (being the Queen of Scrabble)!

Bob and Mary Teresa were adventurous. They spent 65 years dancing, camping, relaxing at cottages, sking and traveling. They drove across the country three times, snorkled in Hawaii, cruised to Alaska and drank Guiness in Ireland. The highlight of their lives were their 25 grandchildren, and 42 great-grandchildren!

Finally, relaxing as snowbirds in Taveres, Florida (Bob passed in 2015). After zip lining for her 95th birthday, she spent the last year in her home at Sunset Bay. Her warm engaging smile and words will be greatly missed.
