James Edward East

James Edward East of Fredonia, musician, artist, and professor, died peacefully in his sleep on the morning of July 1st, 2025, after a long battle with cancer. He was 83.

James – known as “Jay” to his friends and colleagues — was born in rural Kansas but spent his formative years in Big Rapids, Michigan. His passion for music developed at an early age, leading him to attend the Oberlin College Conservatory of Music, followed by post-graduate work at Eastman and the Cleveland Institute of Music. In the late 1960s, he served in the navy and was a member of U.S. Navy Band based in Washington DC.

In 1970, Jay accepted a position as professor of clarinet at SUNY Fredonia, and served on the faculty for 38 years. Concurrent with teaching, he performed with the Erie Philharmonic Orchestra as principal clarinetist. In the 1980s, he founded and served as executive director for the Fredonia Chamber Players, now known as the Western New York Chamber Orchestra. Over the years he also performed frequently with the Buffalo Philharmonic as well as numerous chamber ensembles.

After retirement, Jay took up art, building a successful second career as a painter. His landscapes and other works have been shown in numerous local and regional galleries over the past decade. Jay was a voracious reader, a cinephile, and a cook.

Jay is preceded in death by his parents Vernon and Imogene East and his brother John East. He is survived by his wife Phyllis East, son Alexander East, son-in-law Jon Kowing, son Chris East, and daughter-in-law Jenn Reese. At Jay’s request, no formal funeral services will be held.
