James R. Lewetzki
James R. Lewetzki, 72, of Dunkirk, passed away suddenly Monday morning July 14, 2025 at home. Born in Westfield on Dec. 29, 1952, the husband of the late Julia (Skrzypek) Lewetzki, and the son of the late Eugene and (Majorie) Lewetzki.
A lifelong resident of Dunkirk, Jim attended Dunkirk High School.
Jim’s career was marked by dedication and craftsmanship. He began his journey in the workforce with Conrail Railroad, where he worked for four years. He later honed his skills as a union carpenter for six years. In Aug. 1993, he took a significant step by starting his own contracting business, Certainview Builders, alongside his brother, Kevin Lewetzki.
Throughout his life, Jim was celebrated not only for his professional accomplishments but also for his artistic talents. An accomplished artisan, he specialized in creating custom knives–a skill that earned him recognition, even being featured on Channel 2 news for showcasing his intricate crafts. His passion extended beyond knives; he enjoyed leatherwork, woodworking, and training in the Mixed Martial Art of Tai Quan Dao.
Community and family were central to Jim’s life. He was known for his genuine personality and his willingness to assist anyone in need. His character was defined by a strong moral compass, never fearing to stand up for what he believed was right. His proudest accomplishments included the work he did as a carpenter, particularly the cabinets he crafted over the years, and his contributions to the construction of the Walden Galleria Mall.
Jim cherished taking long rides on his Harley-Davidson motorcycle and he loved his wife, Julia, and his family more than anything, and they were the cornerstone of his life.
Surviving Jim includes his daughter Cindy (Jim) Ellman and siblings Keith (Marcia) Lewetzki, Kevin (Late Mary) Lewetzki, Carol Duman, and David (Amanda) Lewetzki. Also survived by many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Jim is preceded in death by his wife Julia (Skrzypek) Lewetzki, and his brother Jack Lewetzki.
Relatives and friends are welcome to attend Calling Hours on Thursday, July 17, 2025 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at R. Mackowiak Funeral Home, Inc.; 56 E. Doughty Street, Dunkirk, NY. Interment will be held in Forest Hill Cemetery.
