Gertrude A. Steinmetz, 86, affectionately known as Gertie, passed away peacefully on Oct. 12, 2025. Born on Oct. 20, 1938, Gertrude led a life characterized by her generous spirit, loving nature, and a delightful sense of humor.

A devoted homemaker, Gertie found immense joy in nurturing her family. She especially cherished the time spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, creating lasting memories filled with laughter and warmth. Her love extended beyond her family, as she was known for her kind heart and willingness to help those in need.

In addition to her family, Gertie had various interests that brought her joy and fulfillment. She was an avid reader, particularly enjoying detective magazines, and delighted in the challenge of crossword puzzles. Her faith was also a cornerstone of her life, as she enjoyed attending church.

She volunteered for the Volunteer Grandparent Program at Brocton schools, positively impacting the lives of many children. For years, she also offered her time and dedication to Toys-for-Tots.

Gertrude is survived by her loving children, Roberta (John) Logsdon and Charles E. Steinmetz; grandchildren: Diane (Chris Lee) Logsdon, Sherry (Paul) Burton, and Tracy Logsdon; great-grandchildren, Olivia, Alexa, Zoey, Keegan, Christian, Chimera, Ryan, Jayden, and Bradley. She is also survived by her nieces and nephews Richard, Randy, Howard, Suzette, Lorrie, and Denise.

Preceding Gertrude in death includes her parents Robert and Dorothy “Dot” (Price) Howe, and her siblings, Harry and Wade Howe and Roberta Cross. Also preceding Gertie includes her beloved Canine companion, Bolt.

Relatives and friends are welcome to attend Calling Hours on Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2025, from 4-7 p.m. at McGraw-Kowal Funeral Home; 736 Central Ave., Dunkirk, NY. Interment will be held in private.
