Isabelle S. Nohlquist

Isabelle “Izzy” Shrader Nohlquist passed away peacefully at the age of 77 on Nov. 25, 2025 after a long fought battle.

Isabelle was born on Oct. 28, 1948 in Monessen, PA to Donald Shrader and Doris Shrader.

Isabelle “Izzy” Shrader Nohlquist was endlessly proud of her Pittsburgh roots, and the city remained a cherished part of her identity throughout her life. Her adventurous spirit carried her far beyond home as she built a career she loved as a flight attendant with USAirways. Izzy thrived in the excitement of travel, collecting stories from the many places she visited and the people she met along the way –including the pilot who would become her husband, James Nohlquist.

Known for her vibrant energy and unmistakable sense of humor, Izzy filled every room with laughter. She had a gift for lifting spirits, playing lighthearted jokes, and turning even ordinary moments into cherished memories. Her joy was contagious, and those fortunate enough to know her were warmed by her brightness.

Although she loved her career, Izzy found her greatest pride and fulfillment in motherhood. When her two daughters were born, she embraced life as a stay-at-home mother with love, creativity, and unwavering dedication. Whether serving as a classroom helper, designing costumes for school plays and musicals, or organizing and chaperoning countless trips and events, Izzy poured her heart into supporting her children and their school community.

In the small town of Mayville, New York, Izzy became a beloved figure, raising her family with compassion and spirit. She later returned to work as the school secretary at Chautauqua Lake

Elementary School, where she greeted students, staff, and families with warmth and kindness. Her impact stretched far beyond the front office; she touched lives simply by being herself.

Izzy was a fighter in every sense of the word — strong, determined, and full of heart, even in her final days. Her life was rich with love, laughter, and connection, and she leaves behind a legacy of joy that will continue to shine through everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.

One of Izzy’s greatest joys in life was becoming a grandmother. She adored Celeste, Rocco, and Camilla, speaking of them with endless pride and delight. Whether sharing their latest accomplishments, laughing at their stories, or celebrating the little moments that made them unique. Izzy embraced her role as “Grandma I” with boundless love. Her grandchildren brought her immense happiness, and she cherished every moment spent with them.

Izzy is survived by her ex-husband and dear friend, James Nohlquist; her daughters, Denise Nohlquist and Danielle (Scott) Herdzik; her beloved grandchildren, Celeste Villamil, Rocco Bongiovanni, and Camilla Bongiovanni; and her two loving sisters, Joanne Kereston and Darlene (Brad) DeiCas, and many nieces and nephews. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

Relatives and friends are welcome to attend Calling Hours on Sunday, Nov. 30, 2025 from 12-3 p.m. at McGraw-Kowal Funeral Home; 736 Central Ave, Dunkirk, NY. Prayer services will begin at 3 p.m. Interment will be held privately in Forest Hill Cemetery.
