Josephine Christopher, 104, of Fredonia, NY, passed away Friday Dec. 26,2025 at the Chautauqua Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Josephine was born October 12,1942 in Fredonia, NY to Jacob and Mary (Christina) Leone. She graduated from Fredonia High School and Felt & Terrant Business School in Buffalo, NY. While working in Buffalo, she met her husband of 50 years, John A. Christopher, who passed away in 1993. Upon John’s discharge from the United States Army, the couple moved back to Fredonia to raise their children: John A. Christopher, Paul D. Christopher and Mary Jo (James) Tomkins.
Josephine was employed by Fredonia Central School for several years as a study hall aide, becoming “Ma” to many of the students, a title she kept for many years beyond her leaving the school district. She then went to work for the Faculty Student Association at SUNY Fredonia as a cashier in Erie Dining Hall, where she worked until her retirement. Josephine was a former member of Share & Care Seniors for many years and a board member of CIAO for many years. She held memberships with the Friends of Rockefeller Arts Center, Darwin R. Barker Library and the Fredonia Opera House. She also delivered Meals on Wheels for several years. She was an avid reader into her 90’s and enjoyed music, dancing and sports.
Besides her children, she is survived by her grandchildren: KC, Jacob, Robert, John W., and Paul (Ashley) Christopher and Jamie Thomas; step-grandchildren: James (Kris) Tomkins and Jodi (Mel) Altwies; great-grandchildren: Sophia Christopher, Jace Thomas, Maddie and Colton Christopher. Various nieces and nephews also survive.
She is predeceased by her sisters: Grace Leone, Louise Jeffrey, Margaret Valone and Rose Murphy as well as her brothers: Russell (Roddy) and Anthony Leone.
There will be no public visitation. Funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family. A special thanks to Josephine’s grandson, Kent (KC), for his years of love and care while she was in her own home. Josephine’s family also thanks the staff of the Chautauqua Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for the care and kindness extended to Josephine and family.
