Ruby A. McKay

Ruby A. (Shear) McKay, 95, of Newark, NY, formerly of Dunkirk and Fredonia, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 13, 2025 at the DeMay Living Center in Newark, NY. Born in Buffalo, NY on June 8, 1930, she was the wife of the late Roy McKay and daughter of the late Ira P. and Anna E. (Fitch) Shear.

Ruby graduated from Fredonia high school class of 1947. While raising her five children in Dunkirk, Ruby was a committed school and community volunteer. She was employed for many years at a variety of jobs including clerk at Janyne’s Clothing Store and as a waitress at Kresge, Cease’s and Rusch’s Restaurant. She retired from Key Bank in 1987 as a teller.

While living at Concord Estate in Fredonia Ruby enjoyed bingo, movie night, pot-Luck dinners and many more activities with her family of friends. Ruby most recently lived in Macedon NY, close to family, where she made new friends. She was a woman of faith, having been a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Fredonia since 1949. She loved reading books, had a heart of gold, and will be missed by many.

Ruby will be lovingly remembered by her children, Linda (David) Maty, Marion NY; Judy (Jerry) Drummond, Fredonia NY; Donna (Eric) Stahlecker, Hilton NY; Debra (Billy) Bass, Bandera, Texas; and Lynelle (late James) McKay, Austin Texas, and also her nine grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Predeceased by her parents, Ira Phillip Shear and Anna Eliza (Fitch) Shear; husband Roy McKay; son James McKay; husband Paul Foreman; brothers, Ira, Charles, Robert Shear and sisters, Evelyn Shear and Daisy Ann Cramer.

Per Ruby’s wishes, there will be no calling hours. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family; Interment was held privately at Willowbrook Park Cemetery. Arrangements are by the McGraw-Kowal Funeral Home; 736 Central Ave., Dunkirk, NY.
