Donald “Ted” Monroe

Donald P. Monroe, Jr., always known as “Ted”, was born in Dunkirk, NY on March 24, 1939 and passed away on Dec. 30, 2025 from a tragic accident on Christmas Day.

He graduated from Dunkirk High School in 1957 after attending The Lawrenceville School in New Jersey. He excelled in high school football and basketball and even earned a letter in ping pong. He loved music and played several instruments. After high school, he attended Saint Michael’s College in Winooski, VT and the University of Buffalo in New York State. Shortly thereafter, he moved to Towson, MD where he established a successful insurance agency.

He had one son, “Teddy”, who died at the age of six from an autoimmune disease. He adopted and then raised his daughter, Elizabeth (Beth) and enrolled her at A.W. Dreyfoos School of the Arts, a school renowned for its music and fine arts programs. He loved boating and when Beth was old enough, the two of them traveled frequently by his trawler, also named “Elizabeth.” Ted captained the Elizabeth, with Beth as First Mate, to many ports around the Potomac River, and later, through the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW) to Florida, where he and Beth lived for several years. They also made a handful of memorable ocean trips to the Abacos, Bahamas. In retirement, Ted opened a charter business, Palm Beach Charters, and gave tours of the ICW to small groups of guests aboard the Elizabeth. Eventually, he moved to New Hampshire where his brother, Nick’s, family lived and where Beth later also relocated after graduating from college. After moving to New Hampshire, he became a parishioner of Saint Denis Catholic Church in Hanover, New Hampshire. Although he and Nick had been separated for many years, they became best of friends, enjoying time together and attending football and basketball games at Dartmouth College. He was also fond of attending the annual Sail Portsmouth event with Beth and her family in August, and enjoyed seasonal day sails on the Tall Ship Lynx and the Gundalow. When he could no longer live by himself, he found a welcoming home at Hanover Terrace Health and Rehabilitation Center in Hanover, New Hampshire where he found many friends among the staff and residents.

He will be greatly missed by family and friends. He is predeceased by his son, Donald P. Monroe III (Teddy); his parents, Jean L. Washington of Warren, PA and Donald P. Monroe, Sr. of Dunkirk, NY; and a sister, Janet L. Forsgren of Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Surviving family members include: his daughter, Elizabeth (Beth) A. Monroe and granddaughter, Caris McShinsky of Sharon,VT; sisters, Jane W. Murphy of Avon Lake, Ohio, and Susan W. Marshall of Baltimore, MD; a brother, Henry (Nick) Monroe of New London, New Hampshire and numerous nieces and nephews. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 am on Friday, Jan. 9 at Saint Denis Catholic Church in Hanover, New Hampshire. A reception will be held in the lower level of the church immediately following the mass. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Ted’s life. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Gundalow Company in Portsmouth, NH in support of their educational maritime programs.
