Horace C. Battaglia

Horace C. Battaglia, 87, of Jamestown, died Thursday, Jan. 1, 2026, in UPMC Chautauqua.

Born March 31, 1938, in Dunkirk, he was the only child of Carl and Mary Saeli Battaglia.

He was a 1955 graduate of Fredonia High School, a 1961 graduate of SUNY Fredonia, from which he later earned a master’s degree.

Prior to his retirement in 1996, he was a science teacher for the Falconer Central School District for 35 years. There he served as teacher’s union president and coached the golf team. While advisor of the senior class of 1980, he was honored to have the yearbook dedicated to him.

He was a communicant of St. James Catholic Church, avid fan of the New York Yankees and Buffalo Bills, and enjoyed bowling and golfing where he had two holes in one, one at Cable Hollow and the other at Jackson Valley. His other favorite past times included crossword puzzles, card games with his wife and neighbors, watching reruns of Gunsmoke and daily naps.

Horace was a football referee and track official. He shared the camaraderie of coffee with the guys at Fudge’s Sub Shop every day and Wednesday morning coffee with retired teachers.

Surviving is his wife Joan Porpiglia Battaglia, whom he married Nov. 18, 1972; two children, Brenda Battaglia of Lancaster, NY and Matthew Battaglia of Gilbert, AZ and a grandson Ethan Battaglia of Gilbert, AZ.

He was preceded in death by his mother in 1980 and his father in 1982.

The funeral will be held at 2 pm Thursday in the Lind Funeral Home, where friends will be received from noon to 2 pm Thursday.

Inurnment will be in St. Anthony’s Cemetery, Fredonia.
