Terry (Wolfenden) Clinton
Terry Lyn Clifton of Dunkirk, NY, passed away on Jan. 19, 2026 at Hamot Medical Center after a brief illness. Terry (Wolfenden) Clifton was born in Dunkirk, New York on Oct. 5, 1944.
A lifelong Dunkirk resident, she knew early on that she aspired to teach.
She graduated from DHS in 1962 and from Fredonia State in 1966 before pursuing her master’s degree in education. Terry was hired by DHS to teach social studies in 1962. She served as the principal of the middle school before becoming superintendent of Dunkirk Schools in 1985. Through her job and participation in numerous organizations and committees, Terry worked tirelessly to improve the education of Dunkirk students. Terry was proud to serve on the board of the now closed WCA Home in Fredonia and to serve the communities aging population. Through her work in education and her love of family and friends, Terry touched the lives of many.
Terry adored being a grandma and spending time with her four grandchildren. She loved crochet and her beautiful blankets are cherished gifts. She could often be found doing her daily crossword puzzles or winning at words with friends. As an avid sports fan, she never missed watching her Buffalo Sabres or Bills. Terry’s favorite times were spent with her beloved husband Rick, watching the birds and wildlife from their sitting room window.
Terry is predeceased by her parents, Elton George and Evelyn Viola (Brown) Wolfenden and her husband, Richard Clifton.
She will be greatly missed by her family: Erin (Clifton)and Kirk Harrison of Westfield, NY; Andy Clifton of Colorado Springs, CO; Megan (Clifton) and Bipin Mistry of Needham, MA; and grandchildren, Tess, Charlie, Imogen and Milo.
The family would like to thank and acknowledge Donna Berg and family for support and friendship to Terry throughout the years.
