John “Jack” Arthur Torrance, 88, of Gowanda, NY, passed away Feb.18, 2026. Our family is saddened to share the passing of John “Jack” Torrance, who left us peacefully at home this week with his wife, Sue, by his side. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Jack was a Clarkson University alum (’59) and a veteran of the U.S. Army and U.S. Army Reserves. He enjoyed a long career as a Chemical Engineer before retiring to Gowanda. A dedicated community member, Jack was involved with the Gowanda Shriners, Gowanda Kiwanis and the Gowanda Tree Committee. Jack was a man of many titles most importantly, husband, father and granddad.
But to those who loved him most, he was simply the “Tree Guy and the grandfather who loved his garden, his genealogical research, and his eight grandchildren. He and Sue shared 64 beautiful years of marriage, a legacy of love we will always cherish.
He is survived by his wife, Susan; sister, Judith (Torrance) Scott; four children, John C. Torrance, Jessica C.T. (J.R.) Kavanagh, Jason (Michele) Torrance, and Joshua (Jennifer) Torrance; and eight grandchildren.
Services will be held on Saturday, Feb. 21, 2026 starting at 12 noon at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, Gowanda. In honor of Jack’s love for nature and his community, donations to the Gowanda Tree Committee, Gowanda Kiwanis Club or Gowanda Pine Hill Cemetery are appreciated.
