James R. Berg

James R. Berg

James R. Berg, known to most as Jim, passed away peacefully on March 20, 2026, at the age of 91 in Buffalo, New York. Born on Aug. 31, 1934, in South Dayton, New York, Jim lived a full and rich life built around hard work, family, and the simple pleasures that made every day worthwhile.

Jim was a working man through and through. Over the years, he built a career that took him through several local and regional employers, including Farner’s Dairy, the Moench Tannery, New York State, and American Wire Tie. No matter where he worked, Jim brought the same steady dedication and reliability that defined his character in every part of life. In 2025, Jim and his beloved wife, Althea, celebrated an incredible 70 years of marriage, a testament to the deep love and commitment they shared. Together they raised three daughters and built a life full of adventure and togetherness. The family explored the country by motorhome, making memories across the United States that will be treasured for generations. Jim had a deep connection to the outdoors and to animals. He loved raising and caring for horses, and he found quiet joy in feeding and watching the local birds and squirrels that visited his yard. Warm sunny days were some of his favorites, whether he was soaking up the weather, tending to his family’s lawns, or sitting by a good campfire. He was also an avid Yankees fan who never missed a chance to follow his team, and he loved the freedom and thrill of riding motorcycles.

Jim is survived by his wife, Althea Berg; his three daughters, Linda Berg, Connie Berg, and Marcia (Doug McEwen) Berg; three grandchildren, Christopher (Courtney), Brooke (Abisai Matta) and Vanessa (Aaron Slade) Bradigan; and seven great- grandchildren, Donavon, Sawyer, Liam, Reese, Xander, Camryn and Maddox; several nieces and nephews; and the many friends and extended family members whose lives he touched with his quiet warmth and generous spirit.

He was predeceased by three brothers, Charles, Lester and Douglas Berg; and three sisters, Viola Hurst, Mary Stolts and Evelyn Seeley.

Per Jim’s wishes, no formal service is planned. The family asks that those who knew and loved him take a moment to remember him in their own way, perhaps by enjoying a sunny afternoon, watching the birds, or cheering on the Yankees in his honor. Jim lived life on his own terms, with a good heart and steady hands. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him.
